ANDREW ROSE OBE

Andrew Rose joined the Royal Navy as direct entry aircrew specialising in the Airborne Early Warning Role, initially flying the Sea King Mk2 and then being at the forefront of the introduction to service of the Sea King Mk7 Airborne Surveillance and Control (SKASaC). During his early time embarked in Carriers he saw operational service in the Arabian Gulf and Kosovo (HMS INVINCIBLE). Other sea appointments have included Air Operations Officer in HMS INVINCIBLE, in both the Carrier Strike and LPH role; and XO/Senior Observer of 854 Naval Air Squadron. During the latter appointment the Squadron deployed on Counter Narcotics operations in the Caribbean (HMS OCEAN) and deployments to Op CALASH/Enduring Freedom in the Middle East (RFA ARGUS).

He commanded 849 Naval Air Squadron 2012-13 and the Royal Navy’s Maritime Sea King Force 2013-14 – in this post he was responsible for the 3 Squadrons of the RN’s SKASaC Force deployed on Op HERRICK in Afghanistan, Olympic security and OP KIPION in the Middle East; and the 2 Squadrons of the RN’s Search and Rescue Force delivering life-saving rescue services 365 days a year from RNAS Culdrose and Prestwick.

Shore appointments have included the Permanent Joint Headquarters J3 and J5; Navy Command HQ as the Maritime Sea King desk officer; Naval Assistant to the 4* Commander-in-Chief Fleet (and MA MARCOM Northwood); and as a Strategic Planner in the MOD’s Security Policy and Operations directorate.

Promoted to Captain in 2017 he deployed to Kabul, Afghanistan as a Senior Advisor within the Afghanistan Ministry of Interior and leading NATO’s Strategic planning for reform within the Afghan Security Institutions. He was awarded the US Meritorious Service Medal for this tour. On return to the UK in 2018 he was appointed as Chief of Staff to the Royal Navy’s 2* Commander UK Maritime Forces and the RN’s deployable 2* HQ. In Jun 2019 he deployed again for 5 months to Bahrain as Deputy Commander to Combined Task Force 151, led by a Republic of Korea Commander and staff.

In Dec 2019 he joined PJHQ as DACOS J5 for a two year tour which saw him initially lead planning in Africa before 18 months focused on Op FORTIS and the Carrier Strike Group deployment in 2021; in this role he led the J5 planning before moving to J3 to execute the plan. He was awarded the OBE for his time in PJHQ.  

A graduate of the Advanced Command and Staff College, he holds a Masters with Distinction from King’s College and was awarded a Cormorant Fellowship during his time at JSCSC.

 

Promoted to Commodore in 2022 he assumed the role of Deputy Director Plans in Navy Command HQ in Jan 22 and is now in the Security Policy and Operations department in MOD.
